Women in STEM

The number of women opting to undertake a career in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) is increasing.

Women in STEM-related roles increased by over 100,000 in the period of 2016 to 2018, with women now making up 22% of STEM roles in the UK.

In 2019, we reached the milestone of 1,000,000 women working in STEM occupations in the UK.

This was achieved a year before originally predicted, exemplifying the growth of female interest in exploring career paths in STEM.

Number of Females in STEM Growing

Major strides for females in STEM continue. We were delighted to learn of the renaming of the ‘Flying Scotsman’ in March, becoming the ‘Flying Scotswoman’ as LNER celebrate International Women’s Day.

Running a 5:40 am service from Edinburgh to London King’s Cross on Friday, comprising of an all-female crew – including the driver.

This highlights the opportunities now available for women in STEM, but also serves as a reminder that more work must be carried out to push towards equal opportunities. This is after a LNER survey found that just under 9/10 women were not aware of the opportunities available for women within the railway industry, citing a perceived mismatch between their skills and available jobs.

We are advocates of promoting women in STEM positions at Jigsaw Business Group.

Last year, on the 8th March, we celebrated International Women’s Day. We produced an infographic discussing the increase of women working within STEM roles that you can check out here.
